Summative Reflections on the MDE program

My path to the Masters of Distance Education (MDE) program specialization Distance Education Technology at University of Maryland University College (UMUC) was full of bends before I chose education much less distance education. I earned a Bachelors Degree in chemistry from the University of Delaware, located in Newark Delaware, were I first tutored students who were considered hopeless. However, my belief is that there is no hopeless or throw away people, just people we have not figured out how to reach. My students not only passed their chemistry course they remained in school and did not drop out. At that point, I new with academic support students will stay in school. Now, after my experience in the MDE program I say “learners need scaffolding to reduce attrition rates”.

I earned my Masters of Science degree specializing in Bioinorganic Chemistry from Drexel University, located Philadelphia Pennsylvania. My job was as a Teaching Assistant (TA) for general chemistry classes. Once again I was given the students who were marginal. The problem, the vast number of students including the marginal student which needed help was overwhelming for all the TA. The learners with scaffolding succeeded and finished the course while the other learners had a large attrition rate. I was convinced there is a better way to teach chemistry.

Amazingly, my personal journey to find self was facilitated as a result of the progression towards the Maters of Distance Education (MDE). When I entered the MDE program I was going through a divorce; my self-esteem was low. The MDE program provided access that allowed me to master new skill sets and strengthening other skill sets. Each course taken, supported my knowledge construction forming additions to my knowledge base; clarifying my mission. My dream is to design and develop my own school for preK-12 education system which has in house and virtual component; thus, the reason for me being at UMUC. Additionally, I’m designing the plans for a host of chemistry learning tools for developing countries and depressed urban communities in the developed world. The MDE program has given me the skills to design, develop, implement and evaluate learning environments. My original mission was to engage in the fight to end poverty through education. The MDE program illustrated how infrastructure, policies within local governing bodies, various cultural biases, political freedom, cost, and new business demands all play a role in poverty reduction; education is just one aspect.

In the spring of 2002, I started an after-school program. It was during my outreach program that my decision to continue in the teaching profession was solidified. In the inner city I found that student’s were being warehoused in schools instead of educated. My experience in the MDE program enlightened my mind that in some place around the world students are sitting on dirt floors and have to pay for education when they make between one dollar and four dollars per day. Consequently, I have a global mindset. The new question is: how to provide or enhance virtual global chemistry programs?

My educational philosophy is basically a constructivist philosophy which relies on various theories including Dewey and Gardner to create a student-centered learning environment similar the client-centered therapy environments of Carl Rogers. Now, I have skills to produce and evaluate constructivist learning environments. I believe education should be designed in a way that takes full advantage of students with diverse backgrounds and multiple intelligences. I continue to believe that students should have access to 24 hour learning facilities. I now believe that various forms of distance environments can find different niches to make education inclusive one of the tenets of distance education philosophy. The ultimate goal is to develop critical thinkers.

I obtained my MBA from UMUC by December 2009. My company, Jackson Educational Services, is being completely revamped due to my experiences in the MDE and MBA program. Jackson Educational Services (JES) is switching to an online constructivists learning environment that caters to both academic education and corporate training.
